Gardening Planting Tips
1. Moisten the soil and compost well. Fill approximately 1/3 full (6"-8" deep) with a mixture of 50/50 garden soil and compost.
2. Evenly place 3 to 5 seed potatoes and/or pieces ("eyes up") and cover with 3 inches of soil.
3. As the potatoes continue to grow, keep adding soil/compost mixture until you reach the top of the grow bag.
4. Water regularly. On hot and dry summer days, the potato plants should be watered about every 2 to 3 days. On cooler and rainy days, the potatoes may not need watering at all.
5. Look for signs when the leaves begin to turn yellow and the stems wilt. Then you should stop watering and wait a week or two. The potatoes are ready for harvest when more than 50% of the leaves have turned yellow.
Fabric grow bags are far more effective at controlling the temperature and water content of the growing medium than traditional plastic pots. In cold conditions, the fabric will warm your plant, and in strong sun, it will keep your plant cooler, so it doesn't overheat. (Note: fabric bags may require more frequent watering, as the porous material tends to hold less excess water than regular plastic pots.)
Air Pruning Feature
Fabric grow bags help solve the problem because when the roots meet the edges of the fabric pot, they experience the dry soil exposed to the air. At this point, they understand they have reached their growth limit. The roots become "air pruned," which is crucial for growing healthy plants in containers. You will also get significantly more fibrous roots through air pruning. A more fibrous root system (many small root tips) allows plants to absorb more nutrients and water.
