Do you get cold hands in winter? Do you have an outdoor job where you can't wear gloves? You've probably used hand warmers before. Most hand warmers are single-use only. These reusable hand warmers are great, as you can use them again and again! They come in different colors and have cute words and drawings. Keep one in each pocket, and you'll have lovely warm hands despite the cold.
Unlike disposable hand warmers, these hand warmers are reusable. They consist of small plastic bags with clear liquid and a small metal disc inside. To release the heat, bend the metal disc. The liquid will turn into crystals that emit heat. The heat lasts for about 45 minutes, or longer if you keep it in your pocket. To reset the hand warmer, boil it in water for about 10 minutes, until the crystals turn back into liquid. You can boil several at once.
How does the hand warmer work? The liquid in the bag consists of water and sodium acetate. When you bend the small disc, it releases tiny bits of metal. These agitate the sodium acetate, a fantastic chemical, causing a chain reaction. The sodium acetate turns into crystals which release the stored heat energy. It will heat up to 54°C! You can reset the process by boiling the bag until the liquid is clear again.
These reusable hand warmers are great for keeping the cold out in winter. Numb hands are no fun! Keep one in each pocket of your jacket. Cold hands can also worsen arthritis pain, so keeping your hands warm helps. Many people use hand warmers when engaging in outdoor activities. Of course, you need to be able to put your hands in your pocket at least some of the time. So if you're skiing, it might not be as suitable to use them! But they can be very useful when you are hiking, birdwatching, or working outside. If you're out walking and your shoes get wet, you can also use a pair of extra hand warmers to dry your shoes faster.
As we mentioned above, most hand warmers are single-use only. This means that once you've used them, you have to throw them away. That's not good for the environment. Of course, these reusable hand warmers come in a plastic bag. But since you can use them over and over, you won't contribute as much trash. They will last for around 300 uses!
Many people buy several hand warmers and give some to their friends. Do you have a friend who always has cold hands? Do you have a family member who works outside? They will surely appreciate your thoughtful gift. Some people also use hand warmers to relieve sore muscles or achy joints. If the warmer is to be in constant contact with your skin, we recommend putting a layer of cloth between your skin and the warmer. Putting it in a sock works great.
